Are lashes worth it for you? Are you wondering how long they last to see if getting lash extensions is worth it for you? Realistically there is no simple answer, how long they last depends on your skin type and how well you take care of them. Most of the time, lash extensions should last up to 4 weeks+. Let’s begin with why it is impossible to have permanent lash extensions.
Some clients wonder why we don’t have a permanent service for lash extensions. They just want to get the service done once, and never have to come back for maintenance fills. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to have permanent lash extensions since they are attached to your natural lashes and they are constantly growing out, so once your natural lashes fall out, so do your extensions.
Making them Last Longer
There are plenty of ways to help with your lash retention! Here are the top tips to help your lashes last much longer.
- Keeping your lashes clean - Oil, dirt and bacteria build-up on your lash extensions will make your lash extensions fall out. They can break down the adhesive, but they can also physically push the lash extension off of your natural lashes. Make sure you get a lash shampoo, specifically designed to clean your lash extensions, and wash them daily.
- Sleeping on your back - Physical trauma to your lashes can cause them to pop off. Sleeping on your side can be okay, but definitely try to avoid sleeping on your face!
- Avoid rubbing and picking at your lash extensions - Just like with sleeping on your back. Any physical trauma and slowly weaken your lash extensions and cause them to fall off. You could also damage your natural lashes, so we recommend avoid touching your lashes unless really necessary.
- Avoid high-heat - For example, try to avoid hot saunas, hot baths, baking, blow drying them on high heat settings, etc. The high heat can damage your extensions and also make them fall out faster.
- Avoid make-up, specifically, mascara and eye make-up - Generally, wearing eye make-up such as eye-shadow and eyeliner; however, NEVER wear mascara. They will damage your lash extensions and will most likely cause your lash artist to up charge you up to a full set if there is mascara usage.
These are the ways to make them last longer, but remember to schedule your maintenance fills.
Fills are Important
Even though lash extensions can last up to 4 weeks, we highly recommend you come back every 2-3 weeks to get fills.
Reason 1 - Preventing damage to your natural lashes
As the extensions grow out, they will weigh down your natural lashes more and more. As they grow too long, it will start to twist and it may damage your natural lashes.
Reason 2 - Professional Lash Advice
The lash artist is able to take a look at your lashes more often and give you advice. You might need to take a break to give your natural lashes a break, or if you’re having any reactions to the materials.
Reason 3 - The Aesthetic ✨
If you want to maintain the look of your lash extensions, make sure you come back for your fills. Fills also gives you more opportunities to change the look of your lash extension set.
Reason 4 - More cost-effective
If you wait too long to get your lash fills, you may have to be charged as a full set rather than a fill. For many salons, if you are missing more than 50% of your lashes, they may up-charge you to a full set.
Conclusion, TLDR
Most of the time, lash extensions will last up to 4 weeks, but there are many things that can affect the retention of your lashes. Making sure you take care of your lashes is the biggest factor on whether they will stay on longer or not. While, taking care of your lashes will help significantly, make sure you remember to schedule your fills as nothing can truly replace a fill from a professional lash professional!
