How Often Should You Get A Fill?

March 07, 2023

Many clients, especially new ones ask, how long should I wait to get a fill? It’s a complicated question because the answer really just depends on the client. We’ll break down what might cause some differences on how often you’ll need fills.

How long and how full your lash extensions are.

If you have really long and dramatic lashes (15mm+), it is advised to get weekly mini-fills as outgrown lashes can put more pressure on your natural lashes compared to shorter extensions and can damage them. The longer and heavier your lashes are, the faster you need to remove the outgrown lashes to prevent damage.

How oily your skin is

Due to the nature of lash adhesive, typically, clients with oily skin have a harder time with lash retention. This is because the oil on your skin and hair make it harder for the adhesive cure properly. Oil also breaks down the lash adhesive. Unfortunately, this will cause you to need fills more often. One way to help with this, is to gently wash your lashes with a quality lash shampoo everyday and blow dry them on cool setting.

How active you are

Your sweat contains water and salt that can cause your natural lashes to dehydrate and cause the lash adhesive to break down. Although gently washing your lashes after working out can help with retention, it will still slightly cause some lash shedding.

How tolerant you are with slight gaps in your lashes

Over time your lash extensions will slowly start to fall out. If you’re the type of person that hates any gaps or imperfections, a weekly fill might be the best option for you! It will keep your lashes looking full and perfect at all times. If you’re okay with slight gaps for a couple days, you can go a little longer between fills.

Your natural shedding cycle.

Every person goes through a lash shedding cycle, just like the hair on your head. When you’re on the shedding phase of your hair cycle, you will probably need to get fills more often.

Medication, Pregnancy, or anything that affects your hormones

Medications, pregnancy and other things that affect your hormones can cause changes in your hair follicles and hair shedding cycle. If you’re experiencing more shedding than usual, it could be changes in your medication or pregnancy. Some lash artists have reported to notice that clients are pregnant before the client even knows due to changes in their lashes!

These are the major factors that affect your retention and your fill schedule. Consult with your lash artist to see what works best for you!
