Are you a new client and wondering if you should be concerned about red eyes after your appointment? We’re here to break it down: What are the possible causes of red eyes after my appointment? What can I do to prevent it as a client? While we can go over the main possible causes we can never know for sure without looking at your lashes! It is always recommended and important to have a discussion with your lash artist and possibly your doctor if becomes really bad and bothersome!

Causes of Red Eyes

Before we get into how we can prevent red eyes after your appointment, it’s important to understand what might be causing in the first place.

Allergic Reactions

Some people might be allergic to the materials in the lash extensions or the lash adhesive. Most modern lash adhesives contain something called cyanoacrylate. So if you are known to have allergies to acrylic, it’s best to avoid getting lash extensions.

Chemical Irritation

The lash adhesive used to glue the extension to your natural lashes releases fumes and if your eyes are not properly closed, it may irritate your eyes.

Physical Irritation

If your lash artist places any tape or gel pads too close to your eyeballs, it is possible that the materials are rubbing against your eyeball which could cause physical irritation to your eyeballs.

Dry Eyes

Some people are more prone to dry eyes. Especially when someone is working on your eyeballs, it might cause it to become more dry and cause redness.

Moving around during your appointment

Related to the chemical irritation cause, excessive movements such as, but not limited to: talking, scratching, sighing, and eye fluttering can cause your eyes to slightly open. This will cause the adhesive fumes to go into your eyes and cause redness and irritation.

Prevention

Do your research

The best way to prevent redness is to do your research on the lash salon or artist that you are going to. Make sure that they are properly licensed and certified by the state board of cosmetology in your state. This reduces the chances of red eyes caused from the chemical and physical irritation from improper lashing.

Communicate with your Lash Artist

It is not normal to feel irritation during your lash appointment. If you’re feeling a uncomfortable, or you feel like something is off (feeling like something is poking you, itching, irritation), always communicate with your lash artist so they can check if they taped your eyes properly, or if your eyes are slightly open, etc.

Patch Tests

It is also important to discuss with your lash artist about the the option of getting a patch test before you proceed with a full set of lashes. You will be able to know if you have any allergic reactions to the materials used.

Avoid caffeine

Caffeine might make your lashes unable to work on since caffeine can make your eyes flutter. To reduce the risk of getting your appointment rescheduled or your eyes becoming red from the fluttering, it is important to avoid caffeine 8 hours before your appointment.

Try to keep talking to a minimum

We know that getting your lashes done can be a therapeutic experience for many clients; however, excessive talking causes your head to move and your eyes to slightly open. If you’re experiencing excessive redness, try to keep talking to a minimum for your next appointment and see if it improves it!

There may be several reasons why your eyes are red after your lash appointment, but no matter what you should always have a discussion with your lash artist or health care provider if it doesn’t get better or if it continues to happen every appointment.
