Are you concerned about the possible complications with lash extensions? Although, rare, it is important to be prepare just in case you experience any of these things. Allergic reactions, seasonal allergies, and chemical burns are three types of adverse reactions that may occur when getting lash extensions. These complications are very similar to each other, so here is a detailed explanation of these most common reactions and what to do.

Allergic reaction

An allergic reaction to lash extensions occurs when a client’s immune system reacts negatively to one or more of the materials used in the adhesive or other materials involved in the application process (the lash extensions, bonder, gel pads, etc). This reaction can cause symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, and discomfort around the eye area. We recommend getting the lashes professional removed immediately and seeing a health care provider.

Some people may also experience more severe reactions, like difficulty breathing, if they are highly sensitive to the ingredients. In such cases, immediate medical attention is required.

Seasonal allergies

Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, are caused by the body’s reaction to environmental allergens like pollen, mold, and dust mites. They are not directly related to lash extensions, but client’s with seasonal allergies may be more prone to irritation or discomfort around the eyes, which can be made worse by lash extensions since the lash extensions make it easier for allergens to get trapped in your lashes. Symptoms of seasonal allergies may include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and nasal congestion. We recommend speaking to your health care provider and finding a solution to get your seasonal allergies under control. It might also be recommended to take a break from lash extensions until the allergy season is over.

Chemical Burn

A chemical burn occurs when the skin or eyes are exposed to the lash extension adhesives. A chemical burn can occur if the lash artist improperly tapes your eyelid too high preventing you from closing your eyes fully. A chemical burn can also occur from improper application, like getting the adhesive in direct contact with the skin or eyes. Symptoms of a chemical burn include pain, redness, blistering, and peeling of the skin around the eye area.

Minimize your risk

To minimize the risk of these reactions, it is important to research and work with a licensed, certified, and qualified lash artist who uses high-quality materials and practices safe application techniques.
