All Your Lash Extension Questions Answered (FAQs)

January 08, 2023

With over 7 years of experience in providing lash extension services and running my own salon, I have received many questions from clients. I came up with some of the most frequently asked questions here hoping that it will help any questions you might have about lash extensions!

Q: What are lash extensions and how long do they last?

Eyelash extensions are 1 or more eyelash extensions applied per one natural lash enhancing the natural lashes’ curl, thickness and length. A person’s lash cycle determines how long their lash extensions last. For most people, they last around 4 weeks, but the upkeep of getting a lash fill is every 2-3 weeks.

Q: How long is the process and what does it consist of?

A: Eyelash application usually takes 1.5-2.5 hrs depending on the set and the lash artist. During the process, the clients’ eyes will remain closed while the lash artist separates and isolates each natural lash and adheres an extension to the natural lash.

Q: What are the differences between lash sets?

A: Classic Set: The Classic Set provides the most natural look. The fullness of your natural lashes will be the fullness of the extensions. Since this set is not too dramatic, it is perfect for a first-timer. Think mascara except better and more convenient.

Hybrid Set: The Hybrid Set are the most versatile lash sets. They provide the perfect compromise between a full look and a natural look. Hybrid sets combine the application techniques of classic extensions plus volume fans. This is perfect for people who still like a natural look, but would want it to be slightly fuller!

Angel Set: The Angel (Wet) Set technique incorporates classic application with very light volume spikes. This set gives you a dark lash line without adding any weight to your natural lashes & still looking super textured and full. This set is extremely versatile and would work on almost every type of client.

Volume Set: Volume sets provide a very full coverage with the use of volume fans, which are 3 or more very thin extensions used per natural lash. This set is suitable for most people, including those with thin and sparse natural lashes. Mega Volume Set: Mega volume sets provide maximum coverage. They cover almost 100% of your natural lashes, giving that super dense and fluffy lash line. This look is perfect for those who love to be glammed up.

Q: How often should I get a fill?

A: It is recommended to get a fill every 2-3 weeks since our natural lashes go through a lash cycle in which they constantly shed and regrow with the extensions.

Q: What is the difference between a foreign fill and regular fill?

A: A foreign fill is a fill appointment with a different salon than the one where the original lash service was performed. A regular fill, on the other hand, is a maintenance appointment with the same lash artist or salon. Many salons and lash artists distinguish between them because they cannot guarantee the quality of the lash extensions applied by another artist or salon.

Q: What material are lash extensions made of?

A: Lash extensions are typically made of synthetic fibers, such as polyester or nylon, or they can be made of natural materials, such as silk or mink.

Q: Do eyelash extensions damage my natural lashes?

A: When done correctly by a licensed and trained professional, eyelash extensions do not damage the eyes or natural lashes. However, clients with sensitivities are recommended receiving a patch test prior to eyelash extension application. We have an entire blog post dedicated to the “dangers” of lash extensions.

Q: How do I know if I’m a good candidate for lash extensions?

A: Anyone can get lash extensions, even if they are thin, short, or sparse. However, if your lashes have been previously damaged or if you have Trichotillomania (the urge to pull out your natural hair/lashes), it is not recommended to get lash extensions. Also if you’re unable to sit for long periods of time without moving, I also do not recommend getting lash extensions. Most salons and lash artists offer consultations to determine the best set of lash extensions for your individual lashes.

Q: How do I know if I’m allergic to lash extensions?

A: Before getting lash extensions, it is recommended to ask your lash artist or salon if they offer patch tests. This is because some eyelash adhesives contain acrylic, and if you are allergic to acrylic, I do not recommend getting lash extensions. Most reputable salons and lash artists should offer patch tests to ensure that the adhesive does not cause any allergic reactions.

Q: How do I take care of my lashes?

A: After getting your lashes done, avoid getting your lashes wet for at least 24-48 hours. Avoid using oil based products around the eyes as it will cause the glue to deteriorate, causing the extensions to shed quicker. I recommend washing the extensions once a day to ensure maximum retention. Vitamin intake and various lifestyle habits can have effects on the retention of the extensions as well.

Q: Am I allowed to wear makeup?

A: To ensure the best retention for your extensions, I do not recommend using any makeup around the eyes. Using face makeup is okay, just make sure to use an oil-free cleanser to remove the makeup. The use of mascara is completely prohibited as it will clump the extensions together and damage the natural lashes.
