The Importance of Sleep As A New Lash Artist

March 22, 2023

Are you getting enough sleep as a lash artist? With our hectic schedules, sometimes it’s hard to find enough time to sleep, but it’s a horrible mistake to make, especially as a beginner lash artist. Here’s a list of reasons why it is so important as a lash artist:

1. Improved Focus

Lashing is a detail oriented activity. Styling your client’s eyes to match what they want is a task that requires a lot of attention. Lack of sleep has been known to slow down your thought processes and reduce alertness and concentration.

2. Less Mistakes & Accidents

As a lash artist you are working extremely close to your client’s eyes. Slight unwanted movements could potentially harm your clients. Getting enough sleep will give you the focus and concentration to prevent accidents.

3. Better Mood

Lashing is a customer service job. You work directly with clients and it’s part of the job to be welcoming and friendly to your clients. Lack of sleep is been shown to increase levels of anger, frustration, irritability and sadness.

4. Helps Learning

Especially true for beginner lash artists, sleeping helps us learn motor skills. Most people will not be able to have complete tweezer control for a few months to a few years into lashing. Sleeping (specifically deep NREM sleep towards the end of the night) helps us learn these fine motor skills faster. Here is a study showing the importance of deep NREM sleep to learn motor skills

Some tips for getting a better night’s sleep

Keeping a consistent schedule

As a lash artist, I understand that our work is client-based, so our schedules can get really unpredictable. Some days we might have a full day packed full of clients, or some days where it’s relaxed with 1 or 2 clients. Regardless, even on our days off, keeping a predictable sleep schedule where we sleep and wake up at the same time everyday can really help get deep sleep.

Exercise

This is important for two reasons. As a lash artist, you are going to be sitting for long periods of time. It is important to stay active outside the work place. Exercise also helps you sleep better and more deeply.

Avoid Caffeine

Depending on the person, caffeine intake can dramatically affect your sleep. For most people caffeine is okay as long as it is consumed earlier in the day.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol has been known to prevent sleeping deeply.

Sleeping has a huge impact on the quality of your work and how fast you can learn as a lash artist.
